I have heard, read and learned about the BenCab Museum from friends but I have not had the chance to visit since it was built back in 2009. So on our 2nd day in the city, we decided to take a trip to Tuba, Benguet, where the famous BenCab Museum is located. After about a 45 minute-drive from city proper, we arrived at the Museum, which houses the masterpieces of 2006 National Artist for Visual Arts (Painting), Benedicto Cabrera.

Facade of the BenCab Museum

The BenCab Museum’s art collection is divided into 10 galleries: BenCab Gallery, Cordillera Gallery, Erotica Gallery, Sepia Gallery, Philippine Contemporary Art Gallery 1, Philippine Contemporary Art Gallery 2, Maestro Gallery, Print Gallery, Patio Salvador and Larawan Hall. Each area offers a distinct style and personality that will surely satisfy the artist in you.

Definitely, the main attraction of the museum is the impressive and compelling works of BenCab. Even if you’re not an art lover, you cannot help but be awed by the masterpieces of this art genius. His theme is so wide and varied, that there is surely one piece that will connect to you. We also enjoyed looking at BenCab’s personal collections of the indigenous art & crafts of the northern Philippine highlands such as tribal weapons and other native implements which depicts the very rich culture of the Cordillera region. It was said that BenCab has always been fascinated by this and is one of the reasons why he decided to live in Baguio, when he returned to the Philippines from London in 1985.

Now, if you think that all you can see in the museum are BenCab’s works, it’s not the case. He is so generous that he allowed the masterpieces of the other artists to be featured in the museum. The museum has been the favorite venue where artists, even the newbies, can showcase their artworks and exhibits.

Of the 10 galleries found in the museum, I must say that the Erotica Gallery is one of the most popular and sensational exhibits. Its sensual but artistic flair showcases different paintings, drawings, sculptures and crafts from various artists. It’s different take on the the art of sexuality and the human anatomy is not offensive even to the non-art enthusiasts.

After touring the museum, you can do a pit stop and lounge at the coffee shop called Cafe Sabel which serves different coffee selections, juices, shakes, cakes and sandwiches. Below the cafe is the museum’s garden with a duck pond, an organic farm plus a mini-forest. As it was drizzling when we were there, we didn’t get to enjoy much the outside facilities. But still, we enjoyed the surrounding sceneries.

On your way out, don’t forget to pass by the Museum Shop for those souvenir items, artbooks, local textiles, and wood carvings that will complete your Museum experience.

We left the museum feeling enriched, cultured and charmed. Next time you’re in the City of Pines, I suggest you include in your itinerary the “must visit” to BenCab Museum, where art, culture and nature meet. (Jay Ledesma)
