The AFP-PNP Invitational Basketball Cup 2024 of the Madayaw Sports Davao League opened at the Davao City Recreational Center (formerly Almendras Gym) on Wednesday.

This marks the second year of the tournament since its launching last year. Twelve teams from various security and safety agencies in Davao Region will compete with each other for the coveted cup.

These are the Bureau of Fire Protection XI, Police Regional Office XI, Davao City Police Office, Philippine Coast Guard XI, 10th ID of the Philippine Army, Task Force Davao, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM) Philippine Navy, National Support Units XI- Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (NSU XI-CIDG), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) XI, Philippine Air Force- Tactical Operations Group (PAF TOG XI), City Mayor’s Office, and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RFMB XI).

“Ang initiative nato, from the direction ‘sab ni Mayor Baste, is pahalipay para sa atong mga uniformed personnel—na makdadula-dula sila na makaila-ila sila and then at the same time maka-exercise sila (This initiative, from the direction of Mayor Baste, is for the recreation of our uniformed personnel, where they get to have fun and know each other and at the same time they get to exercise),” said John Paul Escobal, League Commissioner of Madayaw Sports Davao.

Games will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until the championships on March 15.

Escobal said the teams have heightened their preparations for this year’s games. He said through the basketball tournament, the league hopes to instill a much stronger camaraderie between security forces. (CIO)
